Carolina Panthers linebacker Damien Wilson is facing an assault charge after his ex-girlfriend said he threatened to kill her, police said.
Wilson, 28, was arrested in Frisco, Texas, last week for assault with bodily injury of a family member, Frisco Police Sgt. Stephen Byrom told the Dallas Morning News. His ex-girlfriend told the Dallas Morning News that he came to her apartment and threatened her after she broke up with him.
Police said Wilson broke her laptop and threatened to kill her with a tire iron, which he was holding during the argument. Wilson’s attorney denied the allegations.
“Damien Wilson did not commit any type of assault,” Toby Shook told the Dallas Morning News. “We look forward to all the facts coming out so his name can be cleared.”
The incident isn’t Wilson’s first run-in with the law.
In 2017, he was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after being accused of threatening tailgaters outside a soccer stadium while holding a rifle. A grand jury later declined to indict Wilson.
Wilson, a 6-foot-1, 245-pound linebacker, played in college at Minnesota and was drafted by the Cowboys in 2015.
After four seasons in Dallas, Wilson spent two seasons in Kansas City, including the team’s Super Bowl-winning 2019 season, and then played last year in Jacksonville.
This offseason, he signed a two-year $6.9 million contract with the Panthers.
