The Washington Commanders are hosting Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton on Monday for one of their top 30 pre-draft visits, according to reports.
Hamilton is seen as a potential top-10 pick and so he might be gone by the time the Commanders make their selection at No. 11. But the 21-year-old would fill a need for the Burgundy and Gold, which is why he’s been commonly linked to the Commanders in mock drafts. Last year, Hamilton led the Fighting Irish with three interceptions despite appearing in only seven games because of a right knee injury.
Hamilton is known for his versatility as the 6-foot-4 safety can play close to the line of scrimmage and as a deep roaming option in the secondary. The NFL Network describes Hamilton as a “true intimidator over the middle” who has All-Pro potential.
The Commanders could use another safety, too, after releasing Landon Collins earlier this offseason. Collins played at the “buffalo nickel,” a position that called for the three-time Pro Bowler to play a hybrid safety-linebacker role. If drafted, Hamilton could possibly fill that spot, but his arrival would give the Commanders options such as moving Kam Curl to the buffalo nickel and having Hamilton be the starting strong safety. Washington also re-signed starting free safety Bobby McCain in free agency.
According to The NFL Network, Hamilton has taken top-30 visits with five teams in the top-10. In recent weeks, there’s been speculation that Hamilton could fall outside the top 10. The safety ran a 4.59 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine last month and then a 4.70 40-yard dash at Notre Dame’s Pro Day.
This is the final week for teams to be able to host prospects at their facility. The NFL Draft begins next week when the first round starts Thursday, April 28.
