Rory McIlroy, one of the world’s best golfers, committed Wednesday to play at the upcoming Wells Fargo Championship in Potomac, Maryland.

McIlroy is hoping to win his fourth Wells Fargo Championship trophy, as well as defend his win at the tournament last year in Charlotte. The Wells Fargo Championship this year will be held at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm on May 5-8.

“It is always good to have Rory in the field, as he adds another element to the competition whenever he plays,” tournament director Gary Sobba said in a press release. “To have him defending his title will be a special experience for the fans and all involved in this year’s tournament.”

McIlroy, who finished second at last weekend’s Masters behind winner Scottie Scheffler, is the No. 7-ranked golfer in the world.

The Wells Fargo Championship is a special one for the Northern Ireland product, who won the first of his 20 PGA Tour titles in 2010 at the tournament. He won it a second time in 2015 and most recently in 2021.

McIlroy isn’t the only former Wells Fargo winner scheduled to compete in the tournament. Max Homa (2019), Brain Harman (2017), James Hahn (2016), Lucas Glover (2011) and Sean O’Hair (2009) have also committed to playing in the event.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly named the year that McIlroy won his first PGA Tour title.
