President Biden gave a speech Tuesday afternoon in Iowa and sparked speculation about a (literally) crappy response.

According to video posted by the Republic National Committee, a bird apparently excreted on the president in the middle of his talk.

Mr. Biden was saying his “made in America” talk was not hyperbole when a white splotch from above appears on his lapel. The president felt something — his eyes turned toward the suit — but he continued undisturbed.

The RNC-posted video had an alternate explanation though. The White House said, backed by some reporters at the site, that the light-colored splotch was corn dust.

The president was standing next to a massive mound of corn and other contemporaneous videos showed light powder floating around.

“If you guys knew your way around a corn silo at all, you’d know it was corn,” White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield tweeted at the RNC.

Gary Grumbach of NBC News posted that “I was in the room. This is an active factory, and pipes full of corn powder filled the ceiling of this event space. Corn powder particles were dripping on all of us periodically throughout the event.”

Mr. Biden was giving his speech at a barn in Menlo, Iowa, talking up his administration’s assistance to the farming industry.

Update: This story has been updated to reflect the debate over the nature of the substance on President Biden’s lapel.
