OPINION:
While watching the activities of Congress and the members’ inability to agree on so legislation ranging from various criminal bills to infrastructure, what’s frustrating as a taxpayer is the lack of prioritizing (“Progressives defend Capitol Hill impasse: We’re pushing Biden’s agenda,” Web, Oct. 3).
Traditionally this would not occur if there were effective leadership that could keep certain members from going rogue. Maybe we have to look at our ability to vet people wanting to join Congress to get a better understanding of their priorities and/or skills of negotiation.
Most citizens realize that our nation’s infrastructure is in immediate need of repair, that we need police reform to address a recent surge of criminal activity, and that working families need tax breaks, why is Congress preoccupying itself with other matters? These include funding to make community college free to students and expanded child-care services.
When reading about the members’ rationale for pushing these items, we see just how out of touch some are with what the majority wants. We are a nation taught to seek consensus, but there are members of Congress who lack negotiation skills altogether and seek selfish agendas that benefit only themselves and their friends.
