ORONO, Maine (AP) - A small fire in the University of Maine’s library was intentionally set, and some parts of the building were closed for cleaning Thursday, officials said.
The Orono Fire Department quickly put out a fire in the ceiling above the periodical stacks using fire extinguishers Wednesday night, Fire Cpt. Bryan Hardison said.
Few students were in the building, which was evacuated. The library reopened Thursday morning.
About 50 books were damaged by the fire, and others were damaged by smoke, fire extinguishers and water from a sprinkler system leak, fire officials said.
University of Maine police and the state fire marshal’s office are conducting an investigation.
