When D.K. Metcalf reached a top speed of 22.64 mph as he chased down Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker in a game last October, USA Track and Field invited him to “test his speed against real speed” at the Olympic trials.

So the Seattle Seahawks wide receiver is taking them up on that offer — or, at least, attempting to qualify for those Olympic trails.

Metcalf is one of the NFL’s fastest players, running a 4.33 40-yard dash at the 2019 scouting combine. He’ll see how he stacks up against sprinters when he participates in the 100-meter dash at the USA Track and Field Golden Games and Distance Open this Sunday in Walnut, California.

The 6-foot-4, 229-pound Metcalf hinted at his participation Monday, when he tweeted a video of himself with track cleats. Metcalf is one of 15 sprinters listed on the USA Track and Field website competing in the 100-meter dash at the Golden Games this weekend.

It remains to be seen how Metcalf’s football speed translates to the track. To automatically qualify for the Olympics, which will be held in Tokyo this year and begin July 23, Metcalf would need to run his 100-meter dash in 10.05 seconds or faster, per Yahoo Sports.
