CBS’ Jim Nantz had the perfect call for when Phil Mickelson sank his final putt to become the oldest player ever to win a golf major.

Phil defeats father time!” Nantz said after Mickelson won the PGA Championship.

Mickelson, 50, joined a prestigious group of athletes who were well past their physical peak but were still able to pull off historic feats. And after Sunday’s win, Mickelson revealed there was one older athlete in particular who motivated him.

“I’m very inspired by Tom Brady,” Mickelson said.

That’s not a bad choice. Brady, 43, became the oldest player ever to win a Super Bowl this past February and is still going strong with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady has seven Super Bowl rings — two of which have come after the age of 40.

Brady and Mickelson also have a personal relationship. The two are friends and played together in “The Match,” a charity golf event that featured Brady and Mickelson golfing together against Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning.

“He’s actually a big motivation, because of how hard he works to be the best and to elongate his career,” Mickelson said of Brady.

Brady also chimed on social media to voice his support for Mickelson.
