The University of Maryland will return to full capacity at all indoor and outdoor sporting events for the 2021-22 athletic seasons, including football and basketball, the school announced Monday.
The move comes after Prince George’s County lifted capacity and distancing restrictions last week, although the county still requires face masks for everyone age 5 and older — including those who are fully vaccinated. That rule will apply at Maryland games, with fans needing to wear a face mask to attend.
“We are very grateful to the officials in the state of Maryland, Prince George’s County and the University of Maryland who continued to safely navigate us through these difficult and unprecedented times,” Maryland athletic director Damon Evans said in a release. “We knew the day would come when we could welcome our loyal Terp fans back to our venues at full capacity in a safe manner. This is wonderful news for our community and the entire state of Maryland. We are excited to have every seat available for our Terp Family to come out and cheer on our Terrapins.”
Maryland football will play seven of its 12 games at home, beginning against West Virginia on Sept. 4.
In-person attendance at games has been limited this spring. The Terrapins allowed limited family members to attend the regular season finale for the men’s basketball team, and general public tickets opened at the end of March for lacrosse games. There was a limited crowd at the football team’s spring game on April 24, too.
