WICKENBURG, Ariz. (AP) - Four vehicles collided on U.S. 93 north of Wickenburg, killing two people and injuring at least five others, including a state trooper who was pulled from his vehicle after it burst into flames, the state Department of Public Safety said Saturday.

Those killed included one person in a vehicle that was seen speeding and passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone and one person in a low-on-gas SUV being escorted by the trooper before the crash occurred Friday night, the DPS said in a statement.

People from a fourth vehicle that collided with at least one of the other vehicles extracted the trooper, who was trapped in his vehicle, before it became fully engulfed, the DPS said.

The trooper’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening, the DPS said.

No identities were released.

The DPS said it wasn’t known whether impairment was a factor in the crash.
