ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - Officials in St. Johnsbury are proceeding toward renovating the 103-year-old armory on Main Street with potential plans to turn it into a police and dispatch center.

Last month, the select board approved the town pursuing a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state to help pay for the environmental clean-up of the armory site, the Caledonian Record reported.

The armory has been closed for years because of environmental contamination including asbestos, lead and PCBs.

“This will be for planning and remediation of the Armory in order to prepare it for site development into a police and dispatch center,” Assistant Town Manager and Economic Development Director Joe Kasprzak told the board in reference to the grant.

The board also held a public hearing on the project but no questions were raised from members of the public.

The town has already applied for a $500,000 grant from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Officials say the two grants would pay for most of the Armory clean-up.
