PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A U.S. representative from Maine wants to impose a lifetime lobbying ban on members of Congress.
Rep. Jared Golden, a Democrat, said he submitted the proposal as an amendment to a democracy reform bill that has been up for consideration in Congress.
Golden said his proposal would ban former U.S. representatives and senators from engaging in lobbying with congressional members, officers or employees as well as some executive branch officials.
Golden said the proposal is an attempt to “close the revolving door between members of Congress and the lobbying industry and nail it shut.” The ban would be for life and violating it would carry a penalty of up to $50,000 and a year imprisonment.
He made a similar proposal in 2019.
