CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia’s Marshall University will get over $336,000 from the federal government for education and training in advanced welding for manufacturing and other industries.
The Robert C. Byrd Institute at Marshall University will have a new program for hands-on training in advanced welding, the Appalachian Regional Commission announced on Tuesday. It said in a news release at least 18 students will find employment and 35 workers or trainees will advance their careers.
The funding comes from the commission and U.S. Department of Energy.
“Advanced welding is a growing field across Appalachia, and this training program will provide hard-working West Virginians with the skills they need to fill the stable, good-paying jobs in the manufacturing industry,” Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin said in a statement.
Republican U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito said the program would give people “the chance to develop a trait, forge a life for themselves and their family, and contribute to their communities.”
