A major piece to the Hoyas’ success this past season is leaving the program.

Sophomore center Qudus Wahab entered the transfer portal, Georgetown announced Thursday. The 21-year-old started 25 of 26 games during the 2020-21 season, averaging 12.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

Wahab’s transfer was unexpected and the latest departure for the Hoyas under coach Patrick Ewing.

“Q was an important piece of our success this year and he needs to do what he feels is best for him,” Ewing said in a statement. “After an exciting postseason, we are ready to focus on the 2021-22 season.”

The Hoyas (13-13) are coming off their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015, recently losing to the 5th-seeded Colorado in the first round. Georgetown’s run to the tournament was a surprise given the program was picked to finish last in the Big East before the season. The Hoyas also were ravaged by transfers, most notably with star point guard Mac McClung leaving for Texas Tech.

Wahab’s exit leaves Georgetown with two centers on the roster. The  Hoyas also have four-star recruit Ryan Mutombo — the son of Georgetown legend Dikembe Mutombo — as part of their incoming recruiting class.

Wahab is from Nigeria, but played two years at Virginia Academy in Ashburn and two years at Flint Hill School in Oakton.
