JACKSONVILLE, Mo. (AP) - A central Missouri man was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy early Tuesday, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a call about a man with a knife trying to break into homes in Jacksonville.

The man was shot after he approached the deputy “in a threatening manner,” the patrol said in a news release.

The suspect, identified as David Hill, 44, of Jacksonville, died at the scene.

The patrol continues to investigate the shooting.

Jacksonville is a small village about 47 miles (75.64 kilometers) north of Columbia.
