LAS VEGAS (AP) - Students in three more grades returned to classrooms Monday in and around Las Vegas, where the Clark County School District continued a phased plan to resume in-person teaching.
About 27,000 students in grades six, nine and 12 were expected to return after more than a year of virtual learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
School Superintendent Jesus Jara said the district plans to allow more students on campuses when state officials give it the go-ahead to decrease social distancing between students from 6 feet (1.8 meters) to 3 feet (0.9 meters).
The goal is for all campuses to reopen in August, he said.
The sprawling district has some 315,000 students at 336 school campuses covering a county area almost the size of New Jersey.
Some students have opted to remain in the virtual learning model they’ve been in since schools closed in March 2020.
The nation’s fifth-largest school district returned its youngest students to class March 1 with a “hybrid” two-days-per-seek schedule for preschoolers through third graders.
The next wave of reopenings is scheduled April 6, when all other secondary grades return under the hybrid model and elementary students will be offered a full-time, five days a week schedule.
