Bill Burr burned up social media during the 2021 Grammys with a self-fulfilling prophecy of a joke about feminists “going nuts.”

The famous comedian caused cancel-culture music aficionados to melt down during the broadcast Sunday evening by mocking their disdain for “cis-white male” creators.

“How many feminists are going nuts? Why is the cis-white male doing all this Latino stuff?” Mr. Burr joked in reference to his presenter duties for best regional Mexican music and best tropical Latin album categories.

Hashtags for the comedian and the Grammys lit up within online rage, which labeled him a “racist.”

The avalanche of online furor included direct tweets at him that read:

  • “You f—ing racist! Keep an eye open at all times!”
  • “Just ban white men. A disgrace.”
  • “White men deserve nothing.”
  • “Praying Bill Burr loses his entire career.”
  • “F— him in right in his white bald face.”

Supporters of Mr. Burr noted that his wife is a Black woman who politically leans left.

Still, the online outrage continued in conjunction with a self-deprecating joke about his inability to produce a winner’s name.

“I can’t say the name,” he said while presenting the award for best regional Mexican music. “The Grammy goes to Natalia Lafourcade. I will accept on behalf of her. If I butchered her name, I’m sorry. Natalia, you won.”

Mr. Burr recently elicited a similar response for defending former “The Mandalorian” star Gina Carano after Lucasfilm fired her in February.

“I’m on that f—-ing show. Now I gotta watch what the f—- I say,” Mr. Burr said on Feb. 24 on the “All Things Comedy” YouTube channel. “She was an absolute sweetheart. Super-nice f—-ing person and, you know, whatever.”

Ms. Carano received her Lucasfilm termination after tweeting “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors … even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”
