LAS VEGAS (AP) - A late-winter storm brought chilly temperatures and overnight rain to Las Vegas, snow to southern Nevada mountains and flurries to foothills neighborhoods on Friday, a little more than a week before Spring begins.
National Weather Service meteorologist Trevor Boucher said temperatures in the upper 30s made it too warm to expect snowflakes at the official measuring station at McCarran International Airport or the nearby Las Vegas Strip.
He put totals for the light rain that fell this week at 0.54 inches (1.37 centimeters) - well below the normal average total of 1.52 inches (3.86 centimeters) by the second week of March.
Las Vegas recorded a historic dry spell from April to December last year, with 240 dry days before rain fell Dec. 17.
The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort, at an elevation of more than 8,500 feet (2,591 meters) above sea level on Mount Charleston, reported 9 inches (23 centimeters) of snow during this week’s storm.
Dustings were reported Friday by residents in the Anthem area of Henderson and Summerlin in northwest Las Vegas.
Boucher said the storm swept south from northern Nevada, where the weather service issued a Lake Tahoe wind advisory, with gusts expected up to 40 mph (64 kph) into Friday night.
