Serena Williams will not compete at the Olympics next month in Tokyo, she told reporters at Wimbledon on Sunday.
“I’m actually not on the Olympic list, not that I’m aware of,” Williams said. “If so, then I shouldn’t be on it.”
The 39-year-old tennis superstar won the singles gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London and is a three-time gold medal winner in doubles with her sister, Venus.
Williams told reporters that she didn’t want to go into the details as to why she wasn’t going to compete in this year’s Olympics.
According to NBC Sports, Jessica Pegula is in line to take Williams’ spot in singles. Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin and Jennifer Brady are the American women that have already said they plan to play in Tokyo.
