Washington Spirit defenders Kelley O’Hara and Emily Sonnett were named Wednesday to the U.S. Olympic women’s soccer team, coach Vlatko Andonovski announced.
O’Hara, who played every minute for the U.S. in the 2012 Olympics in London, was on the squad in 2016 as well. Her lone goal in international play came in the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
With the Spirit this season, O’Hara has appeared in six games, starting five, and has logged one assist. She also has five shot attempts with one on goal in more than 420 minutes of playing time.
Sonnett will make her Olympic debut in Tokyo after having been an alternate for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. She last appeared with the women’s national team in the 2021 She Believes Cup, playing in three matches and starting one of them.
The Marietta, Georgia, native has appeared in six games with the Spirit this season, starting all of them. She’s logged three shots in more than 500 minutes of playing time.
The U.S. women’s soccer team will kick off the Olympics against Sweden on July 21 at 4:30 a.m.
