After clubbing five home runs in the span of two days, Washington Nationals left fielder Kyle Schwarber was named National League Player of the Week on Monday.
It’s the first time in Schwarber’s career that he earned the weekly award and the first by a Nationals player this season. The last Washington player to win a weekly or monthly award was former third baseman Anthony Rendon, who won player of the month in August 2019.
Schwarber, who hit three home runs against the New York Mets on Sunday, became the sixth player in franchise history to launch three balls out of the park in a single game.
The Middletown, Ohio, native batted .385 with a .414 on base percentage over the past seven games for the Nationals. Schwarber has found success in the leadoff spot with two of his six home runs this week batting first in the order.
Schwarber has 18 home runs this season, which is third-best in the National League, with four of them as leadoff homers. The four leadoff homers rank second-best in the major leagues, but he’s only batted in the first spot in the order for 10 games this season.
