The Washington Wizards are finalizing the hiring of Wes Unseld Jr. as the team’s next head coach, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Unseld Jr., the son of Washington Bullets Hall of Famer Wes Unseld, was on the Wizards’ staff as an assistant coach from 2005-2011. The six-year stint on the bench with Washington was Unseld Jr.’s first NBA coaching job.

The Catonsville, Maryland, native has been on the Denver Nuggets coaching staff since 2015 and was elevated to lead assistant coach in 2016. In that role, Unseld Jr. was instrumental in the Nuggets’ defensive improvements.

Unseld Jr. also spent time on the Golden State Warriors and Orlando Magic coaching staffs as an assistant coach.

The Wizards let head coach Scott Brooks go in June after the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement on a new contract.
