PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward said she would seek reelection as the leader of the state party.

Ward’s announcement Tuesday ended months of speculation about potential plans to run for statewide office or join another effort to promote the populist politics made widespread by outgoing President Donald Trump, the Arizona Republic reported.

“After careful consideration and heart-to-heart-talks with my family, I am officially announcing today that I will seek reelection as the chairwoman of the Republican Party of Arizona,” she said in the taped announcement posted on Twitter. She said it was important the party remains “strong, competent, and accountable to the grassroots.”

Only one other person, the state Republican party’s current state treasurer, has formally declared he would seek the nomination for the party chair, said Zachery Henry, the party spokesman.

The election will take place at the party’s annual state meeting on Jan. 23.
