FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - New daily cases of COVID-19 dipped in Kentucky on Tuesday, though Gov. Andy Beshear warned that the figures could fluctuate coming out of the recent holidays.
The state reported 1,781 new cases, which Beshear called the lowest Tuesday total in weeks.
“That’s a good thing but we’ll have to see what it means,” the governor said at his daily pandemic briefing on Tuesday.
The state’s positivity rate, or the rate of testing that shows a positive result, remained high at about 11.4%.
There were 23 new deaths reported on Tuesday.
Beshear this week expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of vaccinations being administered in the state. On Tuesday he said 66,582 doses have been given, about a 6,000-dose increase since Monday. The state was allocated about 202,000 doses for December, and Beshear said nearly all of those shipments have arrived.
The governor said about 57,000 more doses would be delivered this week.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up within weeks. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause severe symptoms and be fatal. The vast majority of people recover.
