PHILADELPHIA — Throughout this season, Alex Smith has said his comeback from a life-threatening leg injury wouldn’t have been possible without the support of his loved ones.
On the eve of Washington’s biggest game of the season, his family shared a photo that recognized how far the quarterback has come since shattering his leg over two years ago.
Writing on Instagram, Elizabeth Smith revealed she had her husband’s external fixator, the leg contraption that supported Smith’s surgically repaired leg, turned into a trophy that mirrors the Lombardi Trophy.
“Waiting for this game and I’m a nervous wreck,” she wrote ahead of Washington’s do-or-die game against the Philadelphia Eagles. “I look up at our bookshelves as a reminder of where we have been and the hard work to get to this moment. No matter the outcome, Alex has already won. He has beat the largest challenge life has thrown our way. I am incredibly proud and will be cheering loud. Let’s go Washington!”

After missing two games with a calf injury, Smith is set to start Sunday in Philadelphia. Washington needs a win in order to clinch the NFC East. If the team loses, it will miss the playoffs.
