SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Newly elected Republican Rep. Burgess Owens says he accepts Joe Biden’s win as president and has apologized for characterizing liberals in as Marxists and socialists.

Owens is a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump and voted Jan. 6 to object to the certification of Pennsylvania’s Electoral College votes. Republican Rep. Chris Stewart joined him.

On Thursday, though, Owens told the Utah House Democratic Caucus that he recognizes Biden as president and will work with him on policy ideas he agrees are good for Utah and the country. He also softened his tone on his political opponents.

“My apologies go to liberals because I didn’t quite see the difference between liberalism and Marxism and socialism,” he said.

Owens is a former NFL player and frequent Fox News guest who defeated first-term Democrat Ben McAdams.

There is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
