CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (AP) - The former home of Eliot Cutler, who twice ran unsuccessfully for governor as an independent, has been sold for $7.55 million, a sum higher than any other single-family dwelling in Cumberland County since Maine Listings began keeping records in 1996.

The 15,455-square-foot home in Cape Elizabeth was sold by Cutler and his wife, Melanie, to Jonathan Bush Jr., nephew of former president George H. W. Bush, the Portland Press Herald reported.

“It was time,” Cutler said. “This place is huge, and much too big for the two of us.”

The three-story home was initially listed at $11 million in April 2017, and includes a private beach, heated pool, tennis court, wine cellar, sauna and four-bedroom guest house.

Cutler said he and his wife initially sold the home in 2012 to a limited liability partnership that included them, their children, and “a couple of investors” that kept the Cutler’s on as tenants.

The previous highest price for a single-family home sold in Cumberland County was $7.15 million for a four-bedroom, six-bathroom property on the shore of Sebago Lake in Raymond.
