Deshaun Watson officially wants out of Houston.
The quarterback formally requested a trade from the Texans, according to multiple reports. Watson’s dissatisfaction with the franchise stems from owner Cal McNair’s handling of the team and his hiring of new general manager Nick Caserio.
ESPN reported Watson made the request “weeks ago,” but the reports of the ask surfaced Thursday — a day after the Texans agreed with Baltimore pass game coordinator David Culley as their next coach. Culley, 65, will be the oldest first-time head coach in NFL history.
If the Texans decide to make Watson available, the quarterback is expected to be heavily pursued. Watson led the league in passing yards with 4,823 and at age 25, he’s seen as just entering his prime.
Watson also has some say in his trade market as he holds a no-trade clause, meaning he can dictate which team he ends up on if traded.
Watson signed a four-year, $160 million extension with the Texans in September, but he became increasingly upset over the franchise’s direction. After a 4-12 season, Watson reportedly felt blindsided by Caserio’s hiring as he wanted to be consulted on the team’s plans.
According to multiple reports, Watson has eyes on the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins as his preferred destinations. Both franchises have a plethora of draft picks — including the second and third overall selection in this year’s draft, respectively — that it could offer for Watson.
