JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Officers who shot and killed a man in Jefferson City earlier this month will not face charges, Cole County Prosecutor Locke Thompson said Monday.

The officers who shot James Reising, 59, on Jan. 3 at a shopping center were acting to defend themselves and others, Thompson said.

Officers who responded to the Wildwood Crossings Shopping Center found Reising “extremely agitated” and holding a knife, Thompson said.

Officers tried to de-escalate the situation but fired when Reising charged them with the knife over his head, he said. Investigators searching his car found evidence of methamphetamine and alcohol use, The Jefferson City News-Tribune reported.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated the shooting.
