LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Starting in April people will be able to fly to Charlotte, North Carolina on American Airlines via the Lafayette airport, officials announced.
The Daily Advertiser reported Monday that the direct flights on American Airlines between Lafayette Regional Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport will begin on April 2 but tickets are on sale now. American already has a direct flight from Lafayette to Dallas. The Charlotte route will have two flights daily on a plane that seats 63 people.
Steven Picou, the executive director of the Lafayette airport, said they had been looking for another destination on the East Coast for “quite some time” and that Charlotte was a prime candidate.
“Having robust air service is critical to achieving economic development success in Lafayette,” said Picou. “We value our partnership with American Airlines and thank them for their continued investment in our community.”
The airport also has flights to Atlanta and Houston. The newspaper reports that the coronavirus pandemic has drastically cut back on air travel out of the airport. However, they are still on track this year to compete a $90 million new terminal. According to the airport’s website, it has three airlines. In addition to American, Delta and United both offer flights out of Lafayette.
