COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A man wanted in connection with an almost 20-year-old Georgia homicide was captured Thursday by authorities in South Carolina, officials said.
Alvin Shane Barfield, 47, was arrested and charged with murder in the 2003 death of Albert Carter Woolfolk in Columbus, Georgia, news outlets quoted officials as saying.
Columbus police said Woolfork, 45, was seen leaving a bar with three men on July 16, 2003. Woolfork’s mother found him 34 hours later stabbed to death in his home.
The case went cold but in September, police announced new leads in the case, including new witness accounts of the night Woolfolk disappeared.
Columbus Detective Stuart Carter said the new witnesses gave a detailed description of one of the men with Woolfork. The man was described as a known billiards player and “heavy drinker with a violent temper.”
An arrest warrant was obtained for Barfield in December and authorities found him in Myrtle Beach on Thursday. Barfield is now awaiting extradition to Columbus.
It’s unclear whether he had an attorney who would comment on his behalf.
At a press conference Thursday, police said physical evidence was uncovered linking Barfield to the homicide. Additional details weren’t immediately released.
Police have asked anyone with information on Barfield or the other two men with Woolfork on the night of his death to contact the department or Carter directly.
