Marty Hurney and Martin Mayhew are still in the process of joining Washington’s front office, but their roles are reportedly slightly different than previously thought.

According to multiple reports, Mayhew will be named the team’s general manager — with Hurney becoming a “high-ranking” official. Both will work with coach Ron Rivera, who will likely retain final say in Washington’s “coach-centric” approach.

ESPN first reported the change.

On Tuesday, the NFL Network reported Washington was finalizing a deal with Hurney to become the team’s general manager — reuniting Rivera with Hurney, Carolina’s former general manager who hired the coach in 2011. But a day later, it was reported that Washington was also adding Mayhew, a San Francisco 49ers executive who interviewed for the position.

Mayhew, 55, has previous general manager experience. From 2008 to 2015, he was the lead executive in Detroit, where he led the Lions to two playoff experiences. He also holds ties to Washington as he played cornerback for the Redskins for four seasons — winning a Super Bowl in 1991.

The moves are the latest shuffling of Washington’s front office under Rivera. Last year, he hired Rob Rogers to run the team’s salary cap and hired Eric Stokes as the team’s director of football operations. Both men joined Rivera from Carolina, where they previously worked together.
