RENO, Nev. (AP) - The National Weather Service has issued wind warnings for Lake Tahoe starting Monday afternoon with higher gusts starting at night.

A lake wind advisory took affect at 1 p.m. for Lake Tahoe and a more serious high wind warning takes effect at 10 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Weather Service is forecasting winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 65 mph at elevations above 6,500 feet. Gusts are expected to be a bit lighter below that elevation and winds are expected to create waves on Lake Tahoe’s western shore between 3 feet (0.91 meters) and 6 feet (1.83 meters) tall.

Forecasters say damaging winds could knock down trees and power lines and potentially cause power outages.

Travel may be tough, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

The Weather Service suggests people secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, trash cans and decorations.
