CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming will send over 100 National Guard soldiers and airmen to help with security during Wednesday’s inauguration of Joe Biden as president in Washington, D.C.
The troops are going on a volunteer basis after federal National Guard officials asked all 50 states for help, the Wyoming Military Department announced Thursday.
Federal money will cover the cost. While deployed, the troops will remain under Gov. Mark Gordon’s control but be subject to Washington, D.C., laws.
Guard officials made the request following the Jan. 6 riot by supporters of President Donald Trump at the U.S. Capitol that left five people dead.
Some 21,000 troops from around the U.S. will be deployed to the capital, according to Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau.
