BOSTON (AP) - A former Suffolk County prosecutor and defense attorney was arrested Friday afternoon by Boston police and charged with rape.
Investigators said Gary Zerola - once named one of “People” magazine’s most eligible bachelors - had been wanted on a warrant issued out of Boston Municipal Court for rape and breaking and entering in the nighttime.
The 49-year-old resident of Boston and Salem was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Friday afternoon and ordered held without bail awaiting a dangerousness hearing on Thursday.
His lawyer entered a not guilty plea for Zerola.
WCVB-TV reports that prosecutors alleged Zerola was out earlier this week with a woman who was intoxicated and who was driven home by Zerola and her friend. They said the woman woke up and found Zerola in her apartment and alleged that she had been raped.
Zerola’s lawyer described the allegations as thin.
Police had asked for the public’s help Wednesday in tracking down Zerola, saying he might be operating a 2016 White Jeep Cherokee.
Zerola has faced previous charges of rape and sexual assault.
