Georgetown basketball has had two more games postponed after a positive coronavirus test within the team’s Tier 1 personnel grouping — which includes players, coaches and staff members.

The Big East announced Wednesday that the Hoyas’ game against DePaul, scheduled for that night, had been postponed. The conference announced Thursday that Georgetown’s games against Providence on Saturday and Marquette on Wednesday are also postponed, with no makeup dates currently announced.

The Hoyas are 3-8 and 1-5 in Big East play. This is Georgetown’s fifth postponed game this season; in December, contests against Connecticut and Creighton were postponed. The Hoyas are far from the only squad in the country dealing with coronavirus issues.

Across town, the Washington Wizards in the NBA have had their third player test positive for the coronavirus, and three games have been postponed. Maryland had its Big Ten matchup with Nebraska postponed due to positive tests within the Cornhuskers program. The Terrapins have since added a game against Wingate on Friday, a Division II opponent.

Georgetown is on a five-game losing streak, with the latest coming Jan. 9 against Syracuse. Coach Patrick Ewing has preached the importance of taking coronavirus protocols seriously this season. He spent five days in the hospital in May as he battled the virus.

“College sports as a whole has to do the best job they can do to keeping their guys safe, talking about socially distancing outside of the gym, even socially distancing from their girlfriends and friends that they know, and even their families,” Ewing said in November, right before the season began. “It’s a price that they have to pay if there’s going to be some type of a basketball season.”
