CHARLOTTE, Mich. (AP) - The Shyft Group, a manufacturer of commercial fleet and specialty vehicles, plans to hire hundreds of full-time employees over the next three years at its plant in mid-Michigan.
The planned expansion at the company’s Charlotte plant comes as demand for parcel delivery vehicles continues to rise amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Lansing State Journal reported.
Chad Heminover, president of Shyft Fleet Vehicles & Services, said the total number of new jobs that will be added remains undetermined but those are expected to number in the hundreds, with wages ranging from $15.50 per hour to $21.70 per hour.
“Our main product focuses around the parcel segment, which is a lot of the e-commerce companies,” Heminover told the Lansing State Journal. “As a result of the pandemic, all of us have been buying more packages online, which has required these companies to purchase additional vehicles to be able to deliver those packages.”
The hiring comes months after workers at the Charlotte facility were furloughed twice due to the effects of the pandemic on the parts supply chain.
But the plants are currently back at “full force,” Heminover said.
The Shyft Group was known as Spartan Motors before it changed its name last year following the sale of its emergency response business,
