LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man died amid gunfire from a Las Vegas police officer and three other people after he attacked and wounded the officer’s patrol partner with a screwdriver outside a local gun range, authorities said Wednesday.

Las Vegas police Capt. Jamie Prosser said the man was pronounced dead at the scene after the shooting a little before 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Range 702, just south of the Las Vegas Strip casino corridor.

The officer was taken to University Medical Center, where Prosser said she was in stable condition with unspecified injuries. Her name and the names of the other people involved in the shooting were not immediately made public.

Prosser said the man caused a disturbance inside the indoor gun range, police were summoned, and the man was ordered to leave.

Several people followed him outside, where Prosser said he refused to cooperate with patrol officers before attacking one.

“At that time, three citizens as well as her partner officer fired multiple rounds, striking the subject,” the police captain said.

Las Vegas police were involved in 19 shootings in 2020, according to department figures, including 10 that left a person dead; 16 shootings in 2019, four fatal; and 22 shootings in 2018, 12 fatal.
