NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - One person was killed and several others were injured in an early morning fire in a New Britain apartment building, a fire official said.
The fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m., Chief Raul Ortiz told the Hartford Courant. It was burning on the top floor of the six-story building when firefigthers arrived, he said.
Ortiz said firefighters rescued three or four people people and worked with police to alert others to the danger, but one person was killed. The victim’s identity was not immediately released.
Mayor Erin Stewart tweeted that she was “devastated by the news” of the person’s death. She thanked the fire department for getting the blaze under control and preventing its spread throughout the building, which has more than 80 apartments.
Several building residents were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries including smoke inhalation, the fire chief said. He said one firefighter was injured but is expected to recover.
