RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A Massachusetts developer has proposed building a five-building, 260-unit apartment complex in Rutland.

Officials with the John Flately Company plan to start the process of applying for an Act 250 land-use permit soon for the project off Middle Road, behind the John Deere dealership.

The company plans to buy a 182-acre site, and develop only 14 acres with the rest being used, potentially for walking trails, the Rutland Herald reported this week.

The project is aimed at young professionals and “empty nesters,” said Doug Richardson, the company’s vice president of planning and acquisitions told the planning commission. Rent would be comparable to what else is available in the area, and the units will be a mix of one- and two-bedrooms, he said.

“The company owns, operates, and manages properties, research and development, retail centers, as well as apartment communities throughout New England,” he said.
