Superman film to team producer J.J. Abrams with ‘Case for Reparations’ writer Ta-Nehisi Coates

Superman may soon stand for truth, justice and the American case for reparations.

DC Films and Warner Bros. are teaming producer/director J.J. Abrams with liberal author Ta-Nehisi Coates for an upcoming tale involving the iconic superhero.

Mr. Coates, who penned “The Case for Reparations” in June 2014 and has also worked on “Captain America” and “Black Panther” comic books at Marvel, said it was an “honor” to be working on the project and Mr. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company.

“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” the author said in a statement. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”

Mr. Abrams, who is only slated to produce at this point, also touted the partnership.

“There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told,” the producer added, Variety reported. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.”

Mr. Coates previously wrote regarding slavery reparations that it is an issue that must be settled for Americans “to see ourselves squarely.” 

“The recovering alcoholic may well have to live with his illness for the rest of his life,” he wrote for The Atlantic. “But at least he is not living a drunken lie. Reparations beckons us to reject the intoxication of hubris and see America as it is — the work of fallible humans. …  Won’t reparations divide us? Not any more than we are already divided. The wealth gap merely puts a number on something we feel but cannot say — that American prosperity was ill-gotten and selective in its distribution.”
