The Washington Football Team partnered with FanDuel to donate $1 million to the United Negro College Fund, a cause that supports Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
The donation will launch the “Emergency Student Aid Fund” and will support students enrolled in Virginia’s five HBCUs — providing aid grants for students “seeking emergency assistance for technology, housing, food security, tuition, and other education-related expenses,” according to a press release.
The team’s announcement comes during Black History Month. Over the last year, Washington revamped its front office and business side, hiring more minorities in key roles — including team president Jason Wright, who is Black.
“HBCUs have produced some of the most accomplished and successful individuals across countless professions making an incredible impact on our organization along with numerous others in the DMV,” owner Dan Snyder said in a statement. “This important investment is a way to continue to foster the talent at these great institutions and give the scholars of today a chance to achieve their goals and career aspirations.”
Wright said in a statement he was proud to support the colleges during an “important moment in history.”
The contribution comes also weeks after legal sports betting launched in Virginia. The team and FanDuel partnered together to launch a sportsbook last month.
