The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to bring back quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for another season, owner Art Rooney II confirmed Wednesday.
In a statement, Rooney said he recently met with Roethlisberger and discussed their future together. The two agreed the team needed to rework Roethlisberger’s contract for 2021. Roethlisberger, who turns 39 next week, holds a $41.2 million cap hit for next season — a figure that general manager Kevin Colbert said was too high.
“Ben assured me that he is committed to coming back to help us win, and I told Ben that we would like to have him back to help us win a championship,” Rooney said in a statement. “We both understand that the next step is to work out Ben’s contract situation.”
Roethlisberger has said that he is willing to rework his deal.
The 2004 first-rounder threw for 3,803 yards and 33 touchdowns last season as the Steelers went 12-4. But after being once 11-0, the Steelers faded down the stretch and lost in the wild card round of the playoffs to the Cleveland Browns.
