BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Construction on a redevelopment project in downtown Burlington is another step closer to reality.

On Tuesday, the City Council in Vermont’s largest city voted to allow the CityPlace project to move forward after years of delays.

The agreement contemplates construction of more than 400 housing units, 45,000-square feet of retail space and more than 400 parking spaces. It would also reconnect Cherry and Pine streets through the center of the city.

The council approved the project after commitments were made to pay prevailing wages to construction workers and use an inclusive hiring process.

The developer still needs to secure all of the necessary financing.

“I haven’t spent all this time and money for naught, I’ll get this financed, that’s my promise to the city,” Don Sinex, the CityPlace majority owner, said during the Tuesday council meeting.

Demolition for the project began several years ago, but the project has not progressed. If there are no further delays, construction could begin this fall.
