The Washington Football Team could use the franchise tag on All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff for the second straight year, according to a report.
The Washington Post reported that Scherff could be given the tag again if the two sides don’t reach an agreement on a long-term deal. The window for teams to tag players opens Tuesday and lasts until March 9. If Scherff is tagged again and signs the contract, he would make $18 million in 2021 — a sizeable raise from the $15 million he made in 2020.
Scherff was already the highest-paid guard in terms of salary last year because of the tag. A salary of $18 million would be highly unusual because only three tackles make that amount.
Washington, though, prefers to negotiate a long-term deal with Scherff, who can become a free agent on March 17 if not tagged. Scherff has expressed interest in remaining with Washington.
