ATLANTA (AP) - One of Georgia’s largest school systems is recruiting volunteer medical professionals who would administer COVID-19 vaccinations to teacher and others.
Atlanta Public Schools is taking the step in anticipation of shots becoming available to teachers and staff members, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Georgia teachers are not yet eligible to receive the vaccine, but Gov. Brian Kemp has said that he will soon make an announcement about expanding vaccine eligibility to include more groups of people.
Atlanta Public Schools is preparing for thousands of educators to take the vaccine, once eligibility is expanded, Superintendent Lisa Herring wrote in a blog post.
“We know that vaccinating as many staff members as possible will be critical for continuing to open our schools safely,” Herring wrote.
Georgia has opened four mass vaccination sites: Albany, Macon, Clarkesville and Hapeville.
Appointments are required at all sites except for the Albany one. People who meet eligibility requirements can go to the Albany site without an appointment, emergency management officials announced Monday.
Anyone getting vaccinated at the mass vaccination sites must be healthcare workers; residents or staff of long-term care facilities; adults aged 65 and older and their caregivers; or first responders (law enforcement, fire personnel including volunteer fire departments, dispatchers and 911 operators).
