ELON, N.C. (AP) - Joey Baughman tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Donovan Williams with 32 seconds remaining to lift Elon to a 26-23 victory over Davidson on Saturday in an FCS spring season opener.

Davidson had a chance to ice it with 2:56 remaining but couldn’t convert on fourth-and-1 at the Elon 32. It ended a 16-play, 59-yard drive that lasted nearly 10 minutes. Baughman threw a 40-yard pass Chandler Brayboy on the next play and capped the game-winning drive six plays later.

Tyler Phelps drove Davidson to its 45 but was sacked and fumbled to end it.

Baughman was 18 of 22 for 173 yards passing. He added 73 yards rushing and an 8-yard TD run in the first quarter. Jaylan Thomas had 13 carries for 129 yards rushing and a 48-yard touchdown run for the Phoenix (1-0).

Phelps was 14-of-20 passing for 156 yards and threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Waddell. Dylan Sparks ran for a 32-yard touchdown and Coy Williams added a 30-yard score in the second quarter for the Wildcats (0-1). Williams finished with 113 yards rushing and Sparks had 98.

It was the first meeting since Sept. 5, 2009 between the instate schools located about 100 miles apart, and just the second hosted by Elon. The Phoenix won 56-0, but Davidson leads the series 16-3.

Davidson’s next scheduled game is at Stetson on March 13. Elon is scheduled to play at Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
