AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A Maine legislative committee has advanced a proposal to expand health insurance access for retired firefighters and law enforcement officers.

Democratic Sen. Nate Libby of Lewiston made the proposal, which would make changes for retired county and municipal law enforcement officers and municipal firefighters. The changes would include expanding the open enrollment period, Libby said.

The Maine Legislature’s Committee on Labor and Housing unanimously passed the proposal on Wednesday. Libby said ensuring first responders “have access to health insurance coverage, including after they retire” is an important piece of supporting public safety workers.

The Maine Association of Police and Professional Firefighters of Maine supported the proposal. It now faces votes before the full Maine Legislature.
