ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A Newark man caused a fiery fatal accident on the Garden State Parkway this week and tried to bribe a witness at the scene, according to charges released Wednesday by the Union County prosecutor’s office.

Ronaldo Godwin faces single counts of death by auto and witness tampering stemming from the Feb. 15 crash in the southbound lanes in Clark.

According to the prosecutor’s office, an investigation revealed Godwin’s Range Rover struck a Lexus driven by Christopher Meikle of East Orange at about 2:45 a.m. The crash left the 46-year-old Meikle’s car in flames on the center median and Godwin’s car overturned on the side of the highway.

When a passing driver stopped to help, Godwin allegedly indicated he would provide a reward for being driven away from the scene.

Meikle was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead at 3:35 a.m. The 43-year-old Godwin was treated at a hospital and was later released.

Godwin was being held at the Union County Jail. It wasn’t known if he had retained an attorney who could comment on the charges.
