OPINION:
President Joe Biden, amid the death of conservative radio icon Rush Limbaugh has an unrivaled opportunity to do what he said he would do for months, from the campaign trail and from the White House office — that is, namely, unify.
Unify, not divide.
As such, Biden should order the lowering of the American flag, in honor of Limbaugh. It’s the least he could do.
After all, Barack Obama did just that for singer Whitney Houston.
In fact, Obama did it frequently, with abandon.
“Obama has ordered flags at half-staff more than any president in history,” USA Today wrote, in mid-2016.
Obama ordered the flags at federal buildings lowered for the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting.
He ordered the flag lowered after the Fort Hood shooting that left 13 killed.
He ordered the flag lowered 66 times in various proclamations issued over the years, beating by several George W. Bush’s 58 similar orders and Bill Clinton’s 50.
In fact, he ordered the U.S. flag lowered so many times, critics questioned whether he actually understood the supposedly somber reasons behind lowering the flag in the first place.
But Limbaugh’s a no-brainer.
Limbaugh is somebody who influenced millions — a movement of millions, really. A movement of millions and masses of young and old conservatives alike. A movement of millions and masses that also included liberals, Democrats, Libertarians, socialists, progressives and more, even if only to gather arguments to fight for their own respective sides.
Limbaugh’s voice was that big.
And now Biden should order the lowering of the American flag, in honor of Limbaugh. It’s the unifying thing to do.
